Today I am finally releasing a new version of Meditation Timer with a few fixes and feature additions:
- Ability to have mediation timer display minutes counting up or counting down
- Meditation timer is smarter about telling you if you enter invalid period lengths
- Much better UI
- Multiple UI Bugfixes
In addition, Meditation Timer is now 10.4-only. This may well be the last release (for a while anyway), primarily because the features I have had most requested by power-users already exist in another (extremely well done) app called FlexTime from Red Sweater Software, and I do not think it is worth while or correct for me to compete with this app with freeware. Besides this, it will let me focus my efforts on other projects I am working on. I hope you find this software useful, and please feel free to contact me!

Enjoy!

This looks great… I have been looking for something like this.
Does this come in PC also? Or Mac only?
Works great. Would it be possible to add a function to control the number of rings at the beginning & end? I use three in each case. I can easily edit the files sent to iTunes but it would be a nice addition.
I also have edited the sound files to have the first half of the meditation time have 5 min intervals with 10 for the rest. I suspect this would be too complex to implement and not needed for most people.
Thanks.
Hi!
I love your meditation timer. It’s been extremely difficult to establish daily meditation practice. But with your timer, I’m doing it! In a way, there is no more excuse not to meditate everyday.
I appreciate for the update and if you care to update in future, would you be able to make it ring 3 times at the begining and at the end? That’s how my teachers do at vipassana meditation classes. When I was searching for “meditation timer” I came to some buddhist meditation site with it’s own timer, which rings 3 times as well. So, maybe, that’s how buddhist do. Usually, my teachers ring bells 3 times with 5 to 6 seconds in between.
Thanks again!
i got my ipod today (yeah!) and wanted to export a session, it did something, launched itunes, but… i wasn’t able to find the file… any suggestions? thanks and keep up the good work!
The file is in your home folder (if you didn’t tell Meditation Timer to delete it) and its also in iTunes, with artist name “Meditation Timer”
Meditation Timer is great ! Its a shame that you ar enot going to continue with it as it is cool simple and very effective!
I went to Red Sweater Software as you suggested and checked out Flextime but its very complex…I dont want or need all that it can do !
I just want to going using your very simple Meditation Timer
Please keep it going its so good!

What does SIT mean in Meditation timer?
also I want the chime to happen every 30 mins all day how do I make that happen please?
I really would love to use this program but I have OS X 10.3.9… Is there some way to get the older version?
Erin, please send me an email and I will send you an old version.
I love Meditation timer, but have an odd problem with it. I used it to remind me to break for carpel tunnel excersizes every 20 minutes. Then I noticed that the meditation timer would gong even when I had turned the timer off. I finally trashed it. However I notice that the bell still gongs every hour on the hour. It’s definitely the bell sound that Meditation timer uses, but I can’t find it anywhere. I’ve also checked my system preference for Date & Time to make sure the “Announce the time on the hour” option is not checked. I’ve even watched to see what processes are running when the bell gongs and I haven’t seen anything pop up.
Any ideas?
wow that is truly bizarre. maybe itunes is playing it on repeat?
I had blogged last night about figuring out a way to use Quicksilver as a replacement for Pocket Doan now that I don’t use a Palm device any more, and then I decided to google “Meditiation timer Mac” and I found your software.
What I want is a cycle of 10 minutes, then 2 minutes, so I can “work the dash and take a break.” I think I may have to either figure out a Quicksilver script or get Flex Time, because I can’t figure out your ware to do this cycle, and I see the very hack on the front page of Flex Time. But no matter what the cycle is, I like the way you designed this, and I think you’re a man of character to limit your freeware to keep the shareware author in business. Kudos!
oh this is exactly what I’m looking for… but I’m running on a PC… how do I get it to work? it downloads a DMG file, which I don’t know how to open. thanks!
Thanks for creating the meditation timer. It looks like just what I need. One question, I just downloaded Meditation Timer 1.2 and it does not look like the screen shot you show. All I see on my screen is options for “sit for” and “chime” (the bottom half of your screen shot). The the options for entering a delay time and interval times do not appear. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Ann. You’ll find the additional options by clicking the down arrow next to the drop down where you select the chime. Hope that helps,
.wc
Thanks for updating the information on your MacUpdate page for Meditation Timer. Best wishes for the new year…
Hi there. Looks like the link to your source is no longer available. Looks like its been a while since this post. Is the source still available? Are you actively maintaining this code? I like the app and am interested in perhaps adding a few things if I find the time. Seems like a nice simple app to learn some Cocoa with as well. Thanks.
Hi Mikey,
It looks like the url for the source code has expired with my .mac account. Sorry about that! I’m putting it up on a new server and will update the post in just a moment. Let me know if you do anything cool with it. Best,
.wc

Hi Will, I love this timer and have been using it for a while. But today I tried to use it and although it timed my session, the chimes did not ring. THis was very odd, as when I tried to change from one bell sound to another they would all play just fine. Any suggestions?
Many Thanks, Erika
Hi Erika,
That is an odd one. If you try to set the timer to a minute or so, to test it, does it fail to ring again, or was it a one-time failure?
Hi Will,
I tired it a few times and it never rings — it just keeps on counting minutes. It was up to 1765 minutes last time I checked
Erika
Hi Will,
Thanks for the timer, I downloaded it for the Mac and it is perfect. As I don’t always have the Mac with me, I’d like to get the bowlHTc.mp3 to use as the chime for my countdown timer on my cell phone. I’ve searched for it on the net but can’t find it. Isit possible for you to send it to me or provide me with a link?
Take care,
Russ
Russ – you can use Meditation Timer’s export function to make an mp3 that will do exactly what you want for your phone.
Erika – That’s bizarre. What have you got entered for your sitting length, period and delay?

Hi Kevin,
Use the “Export to iTunes” function (detailed in the help guide). Best,

Great program! Just what I was looking for. Thanks for releasing this.
Thanks for a cool little program! (It works well on Mac OS X 10.5.4).
Hi!
What language was the timer written in? would it be easy(ish) to port it to iphone?
I’d love to take it along wherever I go, and I’d gladly pay a couple of dollars to be able to do it.
Great application. On another note, I think found a bug with this program. If you check the ‘Every’ box but don’t fill in a value, then click start, the application quits after just over a minute into the session.
Thanks for your post,I’ve learn some information and get new idea to work with.
just downloaded the timer. how come mine doesn’t look like what you have pictured here? i only get # of minutes, choice of sound, and the countdown window. do i need to put $$ in the paypal pot?
never mind, i figured it out. duh!

iPhone version of this would be killer!
I have osX 10.3.9, but am unable to download your previous version. I would appreciate it if you could leave the old version available. Thanks.

Thank you thank you thank you … this is just what I needed
this is so awesome i clicked on this after commenting on your multi clutch and seriously dude you fucking rock!!
Just wanted to express my thanks for this useful little program. I enjoy it’s simple interface, authentic sounds, and the export feature. I use this for my daily meditation sessions and recommend it to fellow meditators.

I’ve downloaded it, haven’t tried it yet but am really hopeful it’s good. I’ve tried all sorts of things over the years, mostly use two or three event kitchen timers now (seem to be off the market presently, though). Tried Zen Clocks from Boulder, Colorado once (a hundred bucks that fell apart after one humid summer). If this thing works well I’ll recommend it to everybody I know who meditates. That’s two people!
I would love to be able to shorten the delay time at the beginning to <1min. Would that be possible to include in a future version??

I have been searching for version 1.1 but can’t find it anywhere on the web. I have Mac 10.3.9 and can’t download this version. Can you let me know how I could access it?
Thanks so much!
